Sweetest thing ever- Big Brother can't wait! Journey #5

This is my sweet buddy, Hey Jude. (Baby's big brother)

He's been asking questions and my IPs have been trying to answer them. They read him my book (which he is holding in the pic) and now he requests it at naptime and bedtime. He also won't go to sleep without holding a picture of me. Aw!

I've only Facetimed with him once the weekend of the transfer when I first met Lovely Rita in person. He is so excited and full of so much love for his baby sister. I feel so blessed to be the one carrying her for this family. Only 2 1/2 more weeks and  we'll all be hanging out together. Baby's still got awhile longer to finish cooking though. Lovely Rita says he's processing it all well!

They recently got some girl hand me downs and he sleeps in the pile of clothes and cuddles with this monkey that LR told him is about the size of baby sister right now. 😍❤️

He also knows that I'm coming and asks everyday if I'm coming today. So sweet.

I have 2 surrogacy books up for grabs-

The Baby Chase by Leslie Morgan Steiner

Book Description

 November 5, 2013
From the New York Times bestselling author of Crazy Love comes a riveting new narrative about surrogate pregnancy from both sides of the equation—the parents and the gestational carrier.Once considered a desperate, even morally suspect option, surrogacy is now sweeping headlines, transforming the lives of celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman and Elton John, and changing the face of the American family. But how much do we really know about it? And is it really as easy and accessible – emotionally, financially, legally and physically – as magazines make it out to be? We often hear about successful outcomes, but little about the journey – about the precious hope that starts it all, the ups and downs of finding a surrogate, the heartache and obstacles, the risks and expenses at every step, or the unbelievable joy when years of determination pay off. In The Baby Chase, acclaimed writer Leslie Morgan Steiner weaves three stories together — of a nurse, a firefighter, and the Indian gestational carriers and doctors who helped them — to provide one intensely personal look at what makes surrogacy so controversial, fascinating, and in some cases, the only ray of hope for today's infertile parents-to-be.

Rhonda Wile and her husband Gerry struggled for years with infertility. With perseverance that shocked everyone around them, they tried every procedure and option available – unsuccessfully – until they finally decided to hire a surrogate. While surrogacy was being touted as a miracle for hopeful parents, for Rhonda and Gerry, it seemed an impossible and unaffordable dream. Until they came across the beaming smile of a beautiful Indian woman on the internet… and, within a few short months, embarked on a journey that would take them deep into the emerging world of Indian carriers, international medical tourism, and the global surrogacy community.

Moving, page-turning, and meticulously researched, this complex human story is paired with an examination of the issues—religious, legal, medical and emotional—that shapes surrogacy as a solution both imperfect and life-changing.

How do surrogates get pregnant?

It is always interesting to hear what people think about surrogacy. Most people have a different understanding of how surrogates get pregnant.

(This is my 3rd attempt at this blog post, the other two disappeared on my phone. They were brilliant, just so you know)

My most recent encounter-

Them: "So, will they extract all your eggs and replace them with the Intended Mom's eggs?"
Me: "No. They have embryos and they will transfer the embryos to my uterus."

Interesting thought though. Later I thought, "And what about the sperm? It takes more than eggs. What did they think they do with the sperm?"

I am not making fun of anyone's interpretation of the process. I find it fascinating because I never thought about it before I lived it. I wonder what I would have thought if someone had asked me before I learned about surrogacy and became a surrogate. Surrogacy is my life and I am here to help people understand it better.

What I don't like is when someone thinks that surrogates get pregnant "the old fashioned way". Nope, at least most of us don't. There are unfortunately some wackadoodles out there and TV and movies would like to think we do. There are Traditional Surrogates who use their own eggs AND carry the pregnancy. And I'm pretty sure in the old days, they did do it the old fashioned way. The absolute worst is when someone compares surrogacy to prostitution. Those people are purely ignorant!!

So then, how DO surrogates get pregnant?

I'm not an expert, but I have gone through 6 embryo transfers and I am preparing for a 7th. What I know is what I have experienced.

Gestational Surrogacy: Fresh  and Frozen Embryo Transfers

With gestational surrogacy, the surrogate is only a carrier, she does not contribute any genetic material.

The protocols vary, but for the most part, the surrogate will take a combination of medications, shots and/or suppositories to prepare her body and uterus for pregnancy. It is important to prepare the uterine lining for embryo implantation. If the Intended Mom is using her eggs, the surrogate and IM will usually take birth control pills to sync their periods before starting the other medications. If an egg donor is used, then the surrogate and egg donor will sync their cycles. Surrogates are monitored through ultrasounds and blood draws to make sure their body is reacting to the medications like they should. The eggs are retrieved as well as the sperm and embryos are created. The embryos "grow" for 3-5 days and hopefully get to the blastocyst stage before transferring. If the surrogate's uterine lining is nice and thick with no issues, the embryo(s) are transferred into her uterus through a catheter. Usually 1-3 embryos are transferred depending on the embryo quality.

The surrogate is usually placed on bed rest for 24-72 hours.

This varies by doctor/clinic. Some surrogates don't do any bed rest, some do light bed rest, others do strict bed rest. Approximately 2 weeks after the embryo transfer, the surrogate does a blood test (HCG/Beta) to see if she is pregnant. If she is, she will stay on medications/shots a little longer to sustain the pregnancy. If not, she will stop medications and if all parties agree, they will start over and try again.

For a frozen transfer, the embryos are created the same and then frozen at day 3-5. The surrogate will not need to sync up with the IM or egg donor for a frozen cycle.Typically frozen transfers are faster in preparation. The embryos are thawed a day or two before the transfer. Not all embryos survive the thaw. Some people say frozen transfers have a higher success rate. Sometimes a fresh transfer is done, but there are leftover embryos which are frozen.

Traditional Surrogacy

I don't know a lot about the process, sorry!  The Intended Father's sperm is used to inseminate the surrogate. I don't believe shots are involved, but maybe a few medications. (?) Some surrogates inseminate at home with a simple turkey baster, but it is more common now to be inseminated at the Dr.'s office or fertility clinic.

So, now you know how we really get pregnant. If you need more pictures and simpler terms about surrogacy , I have a book for that!

:-)

Two Little Monkeys Turn 4 today. Let's Celebrate! #surrogacy

Four years ago today I had my first "major" surgery and two precious baby boys were removed from my large tummy. (after being in the hospital for a week and transferred to another hospital)

Not the best picture of me... old phone pic.

Now, that's a belly!

Baby A

Baby B

(and now you know what I look like on drugs)

I never did get to hold both boys at the same time. They were probably about 2 weeks here. (?)

First Review for Once Upon a Surrogate: The Stork's Helpers

This book is fantastic! It was great to be able to read it to my children and see that them realize what surrogacy is. They really enjoyed the story and so did I, I think that it really helped them to understand the whole concept of surrogacy.

I have two boys who are young (6 & 4) and they loved this book and have asked me to read it to them several times since we received it and I am more than happy to do it!

I would recommend this book to surrogates and intended parents alike, this is a great way to teach your children what you do for other people or to teach them about their beginning. Thank you Jill for writing such a lovely book, I have been looking for something like this since I started my first journey and finally my search is over!

Once Upon a Surrogate: The Stork's Helpers
For most of us, when we're sick or when something unexpected comes up, we can take a personal day from work. But what happens when the Stork gets sick? I mean, babies still need to be delivered, right?
That's why he inlisted special helpers, called Surrogates! Although surrogates can't carry babies in their mouths, they can still carry them in their bellies!
One special surrogate is Jill Hancock Reeder, who received that very important call back in 2005. Jill grew up in Utah, where she currently resides with her Navy hubby and high school sweetheart, along with their three beautiful young children.
Her husband was an avid blood donor, but Jill wanted to do something more. After contemplating egg donation, she came across the idea of surrogacy. With extensive research and help from another online surrogacy community, Jill was able to make her dreams come true, and help other families who weren't able to have children. In fact, not only is she surrogate mom to a little girl, but also to twin boys! To read more about Jill and her decision to become a surrogate, please visit her blog, at http://mormonsurrogate.blogspot.com
Jill was inspired to share her experiences as a surrogate in her new book, Once Upon a Surrogate: The Stork's Helpers. I received a copy, and thought it was a great story to be told, even though I have never been involved in surrogacy. It is told from the perspective of her children, from how they handled the experience to how they were involved. Jill even involved her children as her illustrators for the book and her father as her printer and consultant!
Jill has even designed merchandise for surrogates and intended parents, using unique phrases and sayings. My personal favorite is "I'm not the mom, I'm just the stork"---I think it would be a whole lot easier when talking to inquisitive passerbys that always want to talk about your pregnancy! You can see her entire collection at http://surrogacybooks.blogspot.com
So if you've ever wondered what it would be like to be a surrogate mother, or to teach your children that there is more than one way to have a baby, this book would make a great addition to your bookshelf!
Back to the giveaway-
Each copy will be signed if desired and will include bookmarks and stickers.
I will continue the celebration for the rest of October offering my book at 10 percent off. (you can even order below)

I'm not the mom. I'm just the stork.

I don't know about you, but when I'm not actively doing things... I forget how to do certain things.

It had been awhile since I played around in Photoshop. I used it for all the fun editing with my book, Once Upon a Surrogate: The Stork's Helpers.

At first I forgot exactly how to delete a background. I knew there was a better way.
(the ways I remembered were taking forever and not quite perfect)
I Googled it and thought "I can't believe I forgot about the magic eraser tool." Duh!

I was working on updating a few things in my book and when I was done with that, I thought I'd have some fun. I've had this idea recently and decided I could do a rough-cut version myself.

Thus, I had a little reconstructive surgery and voila:

Kinda cool in a creepy sort of way, right? So you see, literally, I'm not the mom,  I'm just the stork! LOL Who knows what I'll end up doing with this. The purple background is the background I used in my book and I had taken this picture and cartoonized it like so:

This version is actually in my book. Just for fun, I'll show you the real photo it come from.

Oh my goodness look at my naked belly for all to see. This was when I was pregnant as a surrogate for the first time about 6 years ago.

I know I've talked about my designing before. I almost got addicted to designing sayings for t-shirts and merchandise. I have since opened about 10 shops to fit all my ideas.

I found this picture of me wearing my most popular saying, I'm not the mom. I'm just the stork. This was also when I was pregnant with the first surrogacy.

I was happy with just the words for awhile, but then I came across some awesome clip art... and something sparked inside me and I had ideas coming to me left and right.

This is the bumper sticker version. (yep there's different versions) I proudly stuck this on our van years ago. I know I bought the shirt version with graphics, but unfortunately I must not have a picture of me wearing the shirt. I swear I can picture myself wearing it.

Aha! Found it, but alas my plump pregnant bosoms are kind of covering it all up and I'm kind of slumped over. (twin surrogacy @  about 28 weeks?) This was a maternity shirt design with the text and graphics on the belly.

You can find all my designs here:

Upcoming Surrogacy Radio Interview (details you can see this time)

Link to the interview: http://www.ericksonlaw.net/surrogacy-law-radio (Airing Thursday March 10, 2011)

Details:

The Surrogacy Lawyer Radio Program Presents

What’s In a Name? The Gestational Carrier Name Controversy

SAN DIEGO, March 9, 2011: Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban caused quite a media stir a few weeks ago when they used “gestational carrier” to describe the woman who was the surrogate for their newborn daughter. First, the Australian media created a firestorm about their statement. Then commentary came from other critics who feel women are treated like commodities when they become surrogates and believe the term gestational carrier to be particularly degrading and emblematic of this perceived issue.

On the next episode of The Surrogacy Lawyer: Your Guide to IVF and Third Party Family Building Theresa Erickson, Esq., will be interviewing Jill Hancock Reeder and Melissa Buchanan, two surro-moms who have helped other men and women become parents via surrogacy. The program will air on Thursday, March 10 at 11AM PST/2PM EST on Voice America. They will be discussing what U.S. surrogates think of the controversy, what motivated them to become surrogates and how surrogacy has changed their lives.

Jill Hancock Reeder is the proud mom of three beautiful children and proud surro-mom to one girl and to twin boys. Jill writes a blog entitled the Mormon Surrogate (http://mormonsurrogate.blogspot.com/) and wrote and recently published her first book, Once Upon a Surrogate: The Stork’s Helpers, which her daughters helped illustrate. Melissa Buchanan is a single mother from the San Diego area who just gave birth two months ago to a baby boy for her first surrogacy.

“Those of us working in third party reproduction were surprised and a little shocked over the uproar caused by Nicole Kidman’s and Keith Urban’s use of gestational carrier,” says attorney Erickson. “And even though surrogacy is perhaps better understood and accepted in the United States, misconceptions about why women decide to become surro-moms still are very common. I’m confident that Jill and Melissa can help our listeners learn what surrogates think of this media flap, as well as about other critiques of the surrogate’s role in third party family building.”

About Theresa Erickson, Esq.

Ms. Erickson is the managing partner of Erickson Law and the founder and chair of Conceptual Options, The Surrogacy and Egg Donation Center. In addition, Ms. Erickson is the author of the newly released Surrogacy and Embryo, Sperm, & Egg Donation: What Were You Thinking? Erickson was motivated to write her second book so she could educate potential intended parents, as well as the women who become surrogates and egg donors, about what all parties need to know if they are going to become involved in third party reproduction.

Attorney Erickson is a globally recognized expert in this specialized area of law and is a board member of the American Fertility Association and the legal director of Parents Via Egg Donation. For more information, please visit www.ericksonlaw.net and www.conceptualoptions.com.
