The Kangaroo Pouch By Sarah Phillips Pellet

I received this book in the mail the other day:

The Kangaroo Pouch  A story about surrogacy for young children
By Sarah Phillips Pellet
Illustrated by Laurie A. Faust
Forward by Gail Taylor, Founder of Growing Generations and Fertility Futures, LLC

What a cute story! It's a very sweet approach to what can be a tough subject to explain to children. Sarah does a great job telling the story of a kangaroo family who can't have a baby on their own. The story is told by a young kangaroo named Oliver.  Little Oliver's mom offers up her pouch so that this other kangaroo family can have a baby. The book offers just enough information on the surrogacy process without being too much for a small child to understand. The pictures are darling and the story made me laugh and smile.

My children have read this book over and over throughout the weekend. It's a story that can be enjoyed even without knowing anything about surrogacy.

You can purchase The Kangaroo Pouch at Amazon.com:

As I've been approached by authors and as I've approached others, I've been inspired to write my own book.  But some of you already knew that....

My first review: Why I'm So Special: A Book About Surrogacy by Carla Lewis-Long

First of all, I was so excited to be contacted by Carla. I blogged about it earlier, how exciting it was to get the e-mail from her last week.

THE e-mail:

Dear Jill,

I became a fan of your work as I was going through the surrogacy process. My contacts at Creative Family Connections informed me of many quality people who have a wealth of knowledge and I made sure I paid attention. Thank you very much.

I’m also writing to let you know that this experience, which gave birth to a wonderful daughter, Makana, for my husband and I was so life changing that I decided to write a children’s book. All throughout our surrogacy process, I kept thinking, “How will I explain all of this to my baby?” And that’s how the book came about… WHY I’M SO SPECIAL: A BOOK ABOUT SURROGACY.

I was hoping that I could send a book your way for you to peruse. I feel that so many of the new moms and dads that pay attention to you, may appreciate my little contribution to this way of life.

A little about me, I am a VP of Distribution at Sí TV and have spent about 16 years in television, working at networks such as NBC Universal, AmericanLife TV, Oxygen, and USA Network. I live in Brooklyn and am starting to work on a second volume entitled, – Why I’m So Special: A Book About Surrogacy With Two Daddies.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Carla Lewis-Long

I've been ecstatically checking my mailbox, knowing that this book was on it's way to me.

My son got the mail today and didn't even tell me. I went upstairs and asked if anyone had gotten the mail yet. I got a bit giddy when I saw a padded envelope. My book was here!

I immediately opened it and read it. I absolutely loved it from beginning to end. I love how it's written, I love the pictures. I love how it makes surrogates look like these cute little superheros. It's very well rounded. It helps the child understand all sides of the process on an appropriate level. It shows how badly the parents wanted a baby and how the fertility dr. and the surrogate were willing to help. I love that it shows the child keeping in touch with the surrogate.

I would definitely reccomend this children's book to all surrogates and IP's and no doubt will be spreading the word. I will also be sharing the book with my family. My 10 year old daughter just read it and said it was a good book!   :)

Lately I've been so sick of hearing about the negative views on surrogacy and surrogates in the news, on tv and in movies. I was happy to receive such a sweet, positive outlook on surrogacy. YAY!
